Re: SPL add-on 21.11 released #addonrelease

Hi all,

SPL add-on 21.11 is now being distributed via Add-on Updater.

IMPORTANT: if you are using Add-on Updater, be sure to tell NVDA to not prefer development releases of StationPlaylist add-on.

Cheers,

Joseph

SPL add-on 21.11 released #addonrelease

Hi all,

StationPlaylist add-on 21.11 is now available:

https://github.com/josephsl/stationPlaylist/releases/download/21.11/stationPlaylist-21.11.nvda-addon

This release introduces initial (albeit limited) support for Studio 6. Remember that the add-on requires NVDA 2021.2 or later to function properly.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hello,

From within n.v.d.a, how do I bring up ad-on menu to install them?

Thanks!

Regards,

Thomas.

IMPORTANT NOTICE on SPL suite 6 and NVDA: support will be limited, screen review usage is required for some tasks, future of the SPL add-on

Hello all,

After testing SPL suite (mostly Studio) 6 and looking at life choices ahead, it appears I need to make the difficult decision of providing a limited support for Studio 6. As much as I wished to provide a more complete support for broadcasters upgrading to Studio 6, due to a combination of layout changes, accessibility issues, and what I need to do in life right now, I felt it would be best to provide enough support so folks can run their shows. Therefore:

  • SPL add-on 21.11 will be released (again) with the following issues resolved for studio 6 users: NVDA not announcing changes to status such as automation sometimes (not always, unfortunately as it is related to screen label issue), inability to enable Cart Explorer for Demo version users (Standard and Pro users are not affected), and NVDA not announcing the title of currently playing and upcoming tracks.
  • To obtain information such as Studio uptime and playlist modified status, you should use screen review mode (NVDA+Numpad 7 in desktop layout, NVDA+Page Up in laptop layout, then use review cursor keys to navigate screen content). Part of this workaround has to do with the fact that status bar items such as uptime and playlist modified status do not have accessible labels for screen readers as it used to – one must obtain screen content itself (display text) which is not always present. I’m thinking this is something to be resolved from Studio side as this issue affects Narrator as well – I’m guessing something beyond NVDA’s control. No accessibility labels, combined with screen layout changes, is making it a bit harder to come up with workarounds, but I’m working on providing at least some resemblance of usability for broadcasters.
  • I expect SPL add-on 21.11 will be the second to last version of the add-on from me; I expect the final (planned) version to be released in January 2022, hopefully with more issues resolved (preferably from Studio side). It is time for me to move on, but before I end add-on maintenance, I want to make sure at least you have something useful (and yes, I’m now more desperate to find new maintainers).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: StationPlaylist add-on 21.08 #addonrelease

Hi all,

Looks like I'll be busy with SPL 6 support this coming week - I can confirm status bar announcement problem, caused by items having no labels/names with names drawn to the screen. This, along with support for Track Tool and Creator 6, will be high priority for me. I'll release SPL add-on 21.11 with these changes in the next few days. In the meantime if you are producing holiday shows, please stay on 5.50 until SPL add-on 21.11 is released.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: StationPlaylist add-on 21.08 #addonrelease

Hi,

As soon as Studio 6 demo version shows up, I’ll do some investigations, perhaps early next week (not this week as I’m out of town for an academic conference).

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi joseph

Regarding spl addon 21.1 release, it does not seem to announcements such as “automation on/off” which other add-ons did.  Is this due to the actual program studio 6.0 or an nvda issue

Thanks

Re: SPL add-on 21.11 is on its way #addonrelease

Hi all,

Good news: SPL 6 just came out, so I'll be able to include support for it in SPL add-on 21.11. I'll provide an update once the updated add-on installer is released.

SPL add-on 21.11 is on its way #addonrelease

Hi all,

Originally I planned to release SPL add-on 21.11 after studio 6 was released, but decided to release the add-on a bit early as I will be busy for the next two weeks or so. The upcoming add-on release includes localization updates, with Studio 6 support planned for January 2022.

Cheers,

Joseph

SPL add-on 21.10 coming today, Studio 6.0 in beta testing phase #addonrelease

Hi all,

SPL add-on 21.10 will be released some time today. For now it will be a manual download – I’ll update this group once it makes its way to Add-on Updater.

NOTE: this might be second or third to last release from me- if Studio 6 introduced no major changes, then the next release (January 2022) will be the final release from me; if not, I’ll release something in November.

By the way, Studio 6 is undergoing beta testing phase. Please do test the beta with NVDA to make sure we don’t run into hiccups this holiday season.

Cheers,

Joseph

Notice: version 21.08 won't be the last version after all - add-on maintenance contieus for a while

Hi all,

Until last week I thought StationPlaylist add-on 21.08 will be the last version of the add-on under my maintenance, but things changed:

An important change just landed in NVDA alpha snapshots, a change that will affect a significant number of add-ons next year, including StationPlaylist add-on. Because the landed change is a potentially backwards incompatible change, I’ll maintain StationPlaylist add-on until the change from NVDA is ready for everyone. Therefore:

  • Version 21.08: foundation will be made to support old and new NVDA releases.
  • A version in the future: as soon as the first stable NVDA with the mentioned change above ships, I’ll release a version of StatoinPlaylist that will require the new stable release.

The change: for years people used a specific module to describe control roles and states. The module, control types, was refactored in a recent NVDA alpha snapshot to modernize it and make it more maintainable. This change affects StationPlaylist add-on, and the old way of looking up control roles and states is scheduled to retire next year, making the add-on incompatible with future NVDA releases. I’m going to lay the foundation to support old and new ways for a while, and in a future version of the add-on, only the refactored way will be supported.

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: StationPlaylist add-on 21.06 released #addonrelease

Hi all,

For people using Add-on Updater, StatoinPlaylist 21.06 should now show up.

Cheers,

Joseph

I'd vote Yes for keeping the SPL list alive. Hopefully someone will pick up development of this add on by the end of year.

Version 21.06 is coming, 20.09.x support has ended, why I'm looking for new add-on maintainers

Hello all,

Several major announcements:

  • Version 21.06: yes, this version is on its way. Originally it was a localization update until a critical compatibility issue with upcoming NVDA 2021.1 was found that made the add-on unusable. Specifically, the issue causes several add-on dialogs to not work properly. This issue is undergoing internal testing and will be part of the next stable version.
  • Version 20.09.x is EOL (end of life): effective May 10, 2021, support for 20.09.x-LTS has ended.

As you can tell from the subject line, I’m still looking for new add-on maintainers. I hinted that I’ll be handing over the SPL add-on to new maintainers by end of this year, and here is why:

I was accepted into graduate school. Based on discussions with other graduate students, I felt it won’t be good to study while programming for NVDA project. Therefore, I am handing the SPL add-on to others for further maintenance.

There is a more pressing reason: when I began maintaining the current iteration of SPL ad-on in December 2013, I knew that actual StationPlaylist users (specifically, broadcasters) should maintain this add-on. Although I had passions for broadcasting, I didn’t have time to truly bring that to life. Therefore, I maintained the add-on from the viewpoint of someone with knowledge of NVDA screen reader internals, and I was constantly looking for people who are better suited to keep the add-on going should I leave the NVDA project.

The golden opportunity to leave the NVDA project came when I began submitting graduate school applications. I knew that I have to focus more on school as graduate school education is harder than undergraduate classes at colleges and universities. Considering that I was also planning to coach speech and debate teams, I knew it wouldn’t be right to split my attention between school and programming. Therefore, I decided that this is it – getting accepted into graduate school was the perfect opportunity to hand over the SPL add-on to people who can take it to the next level: actual users and broadcasters who understands the inner workings of SPL and perhaps can learn NVDA add-on writing if given a chance.

As a result, version 21.06 will be the second to last version of SPL add-on release from me, with the final version scheduled for August 2021. After that, I will ask new maintainers (including NVDA add-ons community) to keep the add-on going. I’ll keep my own SPL add-on repo open until end of 2021, at which point I’ll close it (make it read-only) so the new maintainers can fork it and maintain it further.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Joseph

Advisory on compatibility with NvDA 2021.1: parts oteh add-on will noit work under current NVDA alpha builds

Hi all,

I have discovered a critical compatibility issue between SPL add-on and NvDA 2021.1. Specifically, after installing the add-on under NvDA alpha builds, add-on dialogs such as track finder (Control+NVDA+F from Studio window) will not work, traced to changes to wxPython GUI toolkit in use. I’m working on a fix and hope to release it sometime in May.

Note that the fix will target stable channel only as support for 20.09.x will end in May.

Cheers,

Joseph

StationPlaylist add-on 21.04/20.09.7-LTS officially released #addonrelease

Hi all,

SPL add-on 21.04 and 20.09.7-LTS are now available. Note that 20.09.7-LTS is the last version of 20.09.x series, and 21.04 requires NVDA 2020.4.

Note: from this point on, only localization updates will be released until late summer.

Cheers,

Joseph
